They stopped at dusk to make camp and Eadoin quickly gathered together bits of wood for a fire as Doyle unsaddled the horse and rubbed him down. When the fire was lit, Doyle finally turned to look at her. Eadoin could see the anger in his eyes now and she took a wary step back, confused. His face was hard, his jaw clenched tightly as he stared at her. Finally, he asked, Are you married?
She blinked in surprise. She thought it an odd question, especially coupled with his anger. What?
Are you married? he demanded again, taking a step closer.
N no! she stammered.
Good! He grabbed her arms, slamming her against his chest, and kissed her hard, bruising her lips. But Eadoin didnt notice. From the moment her body had collided with his she had melted into him, lifted her face to accept the kiss, and participated eagerly in it.
Doyle shoved her away from him and she stumbled backwards, her knees weak. He ran an agitated hand through his hair then turned to shout at her, Why did you lie to me?!
Eadoin stared at him, bemused. How could he kiss her so passionately one moment, then rail at her the next? Her mind couldnt handle the multitude of emotions clamoring through her, so she just stared at him dumbly while she tried to sort them out enough to answer him. But Doyle was impatient and he yelled at her again. Tell me, Eadoin! Why? I want the truth. Those men were sent to find you, were they not? To take you home? So, where was it I was taking you?
Eadoins mind snapped to sudden clarity. Doyle, please! she cried as she leapt towards him, bracing her hands on his chest. Please! I can explain!
He took a step back from her and she dropped her hands to wring them in front of her. Doyles chest burned where she had touched him. He was incredulous to feel his bodys reaction to her despite his anger. He wanted her. His body ached for her. But hed be damned if hed let her know that. He shouldnt have kissed her. He knew that the moment her body had molded to his so perfectly. But hed had to kiss her. Needed to taste her. Her upturned face was so sweet to him he couldnt have done otherwise. Hed been surprised when shed responded so eagerly to him. Hed been anticipating a struggle and was nearly brought to his knees when she had kissed him back so passionately. If he hadnt stopped the kiss when he had, he would have taken her right then, anger or no. But he feared he had been too rough when hed pushed her away. Now he stared hard at her, trying to get his passion in check as she wrung her hands before her.
My father had arranged a marriage for me, she finally said, softly, eyes downcast.
Thats common practice for someone of your station, Doyle said gruffly. She flinched.
This I know, she said. I knew from birth I would not be allowed my choice of husband. That a princess is to marry for alliance, not for love. She paused a moment. But the man chosen for me was cruel and I feared him.
So you ran. She nodded
My father sent mercenaries after me, to bring me back, but I escaped them in the forest.
Where you found me, he said. She nodded again. But why lie to me? he asked again. But his anger had lessened as he came to understand the fear and desperation she must have felt to attempt such a thing.
Women are considered nothing more than property, she cried. I was afraid if I told you the truth, you would only take me back to my father. I said what I thought I needed to, to assure I got as far away from him as possible.
Doyle sighed in exasperation, his anger gone. She had lied only to escape a terrible fate and he could not hold that against her when he
Why did you not tell me the truth after-
I had planned to, Eadoin said quickly. That night I was taken. I was going to tell you everything. But they Her face crumbled a bit as tears filled her eyes. My cousin. She gave me to them.
They threatened her husbands life, Doyle said, wanting to ease the betrayal she was feeling. Eadoin looked up at him in surprise. As soon as she could safely do so, she gave me the horse and sent me after you. Eadoin quickly glanced at the horse, recognizing now her cousins finest stallion. Then she smiled at Doyle, wiping the tears from her eyes.
Confused and exhausted by the sudden change of emotions in him, Doyle turned away from her.
Doyle, Eadoin called softly to him. He stopped and turned back towards her. She was worrying her bottom lip with her teeth, but when her eyes met his, there was such tenderness in them that he was struck breathless. Thank you for coming for me, whatever your reason for doing so. I am sure you have saved my life.
Doyle groaned and he reached for her. His hands cupped her face to gently, but firmly, pull her to him. His mouth descended on hers and she opened to him, her body hot against his. Little angel, he breathed against her lips, teasing them with his tongue and teeth. You are my reason. I thought I would go insane when they took you from me. Eadoin whispered his name as her body sighed into his and Doyle groaned as his lips claimed hers again.
His arms circled around her to press her more firmly into him, but as his hands pressed into her back, Eadoin suddenly cried out in pain, tearing her lips away from his. Doyle immediately released her, but her small hands gripped his shirt tightly, her face buried in his chest.
Eadoin?! What is it? he demanded worriedly.
He heard her soft laughter. It was a humorless sound, hollow. I told you he was cruel, she said. Doyle stepped away from her, seeing the tears of pain in her eyes, and he was suddenly struck with what she had suffered.
He groaned again, this time for her pain, and he gently turned her, carefully lowering her gown. Ugly red welts and dark bruises marred her entire back and Doyle nearly choked on the sudden rage he felt for the beast that had done this to such a delicate thing. He placed a gentle kiss high on the back of her neck, so as not to touch the injured flesh.
My God, Eadoin. I am so sorry I was not there for you sooner, he choked out, his voice pained.
Eadoin turned to look at him, clutching the loosened dress to her breasts. She gently touched his cheek. No, she said softly, shaking her head. You came for me. My pain will leave me, but I will always remember that you came for me.
But I will not forget what was done to you, Doyle swore angrily. If I ever see that bastard again, I will kill him!
Eadoin wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him tightly. For now, hold me, she said. For I am so very glad to be here in your arms and not at his mercy. Doyle very carefully put his arms around her and just held her that way for a long time.
